PRELIMINARIES The Legal Requirements The legal requirements for marriage or a civil partnership at an approved venue are the same as for civil ceremonies held at Register Offices in England and Wales but with the added requirement of having to arrange with the appropriate Register Office for their attendance to conduct and record the service. However, your ceremony can generally be more involved and leisurely than in a Register Office and it can be as formal or casual as you wish. With the permission of the attending Registrars, it is possible to enhance the standard civil ceremony by having your own choice of non-religious music, poetry and prose readings and for your ceremony to be photographed and or videoed It is also possible to have your own choice of vows and promises that have a special meaning to both of you, although these will be in addition to the statuatory declaratory and contracting words that are required to be said by both of you for your ceremony to be legal. Once the Registration staff's attendance has been booked, you can then confirm your booking at the venue. It is most important when you book the Registration staff to agree a date when you can call in to discuss your arrangements for your ceremony, for example, to have approved the music you propose playing, any poems or readings you intend having and to ensure your ceremony arrangements are all suitable for the solemnity of the occasion. A civil partnership can also be arranged with a ceremony along the same lines or with registration only, without a ceremony. Notice of Marriage / Civil Partnership The term used for the commencement of both civil marriage and civil partnership proceedings is called 'giving notice'. The giving of this notice has to be done by both individuals to the marriage or partnership. It has to be given in the Register Office for the District in which each individual resides for a marriage and for each individual in a civil partnership it must be done at any of the Register Offices within the Local Authority's area in which each partner resides. For further information on which Register Office you may be required to attend please visit the link here to the General Register Office webite where you can find your local office by entering your post code. Alternatively find the Venue of your choice in the database in your area and all the contact information for the appropriate Register Office listed alongside. Here you will also find the latest information as to what documents you will be required to bring with you and the current fees. The searchable database on site will give contact details for the appropriate Register Office that you will need to contact for each of the Venues listed in order to make any enquiries or bookings. This information is issued for general guidance and is not a complete statement of the law. For further information on any aspect of the formalities to, or the ceremony of marriage or civil partnership, please seek the advice of the Superintendent Registrar at your local register office. The telephone number and address can be found in the Register Office database or your local telephone directory under 'Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages'. |
